President & Managing Director
Professor Paul Harkin is the President and Managing Director of Almac Diagnostics, a biomarker discovery, development and delivery company. He was a founding member of the company in 2004 and has overall responsibility for the strategic, financial and operational leadership of the company.Click to Read More
Paul Harkin is a Professor in Molecular Oncology within the Cancer Research Center at Queen’s University Belfast. Prior to this appointment he had been a Research Fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital where he developed his interest in the emerging field of Functional Genomics. Professor Harkin has published his work in some of the world’s leading research journals and is a regular guest speaker at national and international conferences and Research Institutions. Prof. Harkin sits on several National committees and funding boards and acts as a reviewer for a number of major research journals.
VP Business Development
Michael Sloan is VP of Business Development for Almac Diagnostics since 2005. He has full responsibility for the overall management of the company’s business development activities and driving the growth of the company.Click to Read More
Michael has a BSC in Commerce and MSC in Corporate Leadership and was educated in the University of Birmingham, Napier University, Scotland and the Ivey Business School, Canada.
He has over 20 years in senior business development and management roles in the biotech and medical device sector. He has worked in both start up and multinational companies. His previous experience including Managing Director for BSN Medical UK a Smith and Nephew and Beiersdorf JV and Executive Director for Amtec Medical Ltd.
VP and Medical Director
Dr Richard Kennedy is the Medical Director of Almac Diagnostics and is responsible for the application of the company’s technology into medical practice. Dr Kennedy became the McClay Professor of Experimental Medicine at the Queen’s University of Belfast in July 2011, and leads an academic research group which focuses on novel approaches to biomarker discovery and delivery.Click to Read More
Richard is a practicing Consultant in Medical Oncology at Belfast City Hospital and is involved in running first in man Clinical Trials.
Prior to Almac, Richard worked as an Instructor in Oncology at Harvard Medical School where he specialised in translational cancer research and continues to work as a Medical Oncologist at Belfast City Hospital, UK. He is currently a member of Dundalk Institute of Technology and has previously served on the CR-UK Biomarker panel and Enterprise Ireland life sciences technology panel.
Dr Leeona Galligan
Head of Operations
Dr. Galligan (PhD, FRCPath) has worked for over 15 years in the field of translational molecular oncology and holds the post of Head of Laboratory Operations at Almac Diagnostics where she has overall responsibility for all laboratory based technologies and services supporting Almac Diagnostics’ biomarker discovery, development and delivery.Click to Read More
Prior to joining Almac in 2009, Dr Galligan obtained a PhD in molecular haematology from Trinity College Dublin. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship on the molecular mechanisms of drug resistance in colorectal cancer at Queen’s University Belfast and has completed a 4 year training programme in specialist haemato-oncology laboratory services. She maintains registration with the UK Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist and has been awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) through examination in haemato-oncology and laboratory management.
Dr Jude O’Donnell

Jude obtained her doctorate in Biochemistry from Trinity College Dublin and went on to work as a post-doctoral researcher for 2 years in the Oncology Department of Queen’s University, Belfast. She joined Almac Diagnostics in 2006 and previously held the role of Team Leader within the Clinical Department of Almac Diagnostics where her remit was progression of the Almac Diagnostics’ internal R&D pipeline for biomarker discovery and validation.
Dr Karen Keating
Product Development Leader
Dr Keating (PhD) has worked in the field of molecular biology for 20 years, predominantly translational oncology. During her 6 years at Almac, Dr Keating has managed the discovery and development of Almac’s proprietary DDRD and AADx Assays and is currently responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team in the strategic clinical and technical development of the AADx Assay towards commercialization.Click to Read More
Dr Keating obtained a PhD in molecular genetics from University College Cork and completed postdoctoral fellowships in Cambridge, UK and Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Australia. Dr Keating’s industrial R&D career includes 7 years at the Biotechnology start-up company EiRx Theraputics, as Research and Development Manager, where she led molecular biology, cellular biology, medicinal chemistry and IS teams in the development and commercialization of novel breast cancer targets and therapeutic leads.
