The Governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, has begun a two day visit to Northern Ireland with a tour of Almac Sciences’ state-of-the-art facility in Craigavon. Almac – a global leader in the research, discovery and delivery of pharmaceutical services – was the first stop for the Governor who is in Northern Ireland to gauge the performance of the region’s economy.

Welcoming Mr King to Almac and to Northern Ireland, Chairman and Founder of Almac Sciences, Sir Allen McClay said: “I am delighted that the Governor has chosen to start his tour of Northern Ireland with a visit to Almac Sciences.

” I believe Almac offers a real example of Northern Ireland business at its best. We have used home-grown skill, home-grown talent, and home-grown determination to build a world class pharmaceutical services business, all driven from this Northern Ireland base.

“Our ambition is to become world leader in our field; an ambition that many other businesses in Northern Ireland also share. I hope the Governor and his team return to London with a fresh view of Northern Ireland as an economy keen to grow, able to perform and determined to succeed.”

Commenting on his visit to Northern Ireland the Governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King added: “Every month I visit a different part of the UK in order to gauge economic conditions and to help to explain the work and aims of the Monetary Policy Committee. This visit to Northern Ireland is on top of other visits my fellow MPC members will make to the Province during the year and the permanent presence we have in the form of our Agency which has the task of gathering information from businesses to feed back to the MPC on a monthly basis. ”
