`Increase Role of Science in Schools’ says Almac Chairman

Sir Allen McClay calls for strong emphasis on science education in schools

Almac Chairman Sir Allen McClay has today called on the new devolved Executive to ensure increased emphasis on science education in the primary and secondary curriculum. Speaking during a visit of Chemistry and Career teachers from Northern Ireland secondary and grammar schools, Sir Allen said:

“While the political events of the last few weeks and months are to be welcomed, Northern Ireland still faces significant challenges ahead. Our economy must compete with the rest of the world, and it is only through entrepreneurship that we can do this. Today’s school scientists are tomorrow’s innovators and only they can ensure our competitiveness on the international stage.”

“It is important the new Executive ensures that science based subjects play an increased role in secondary and grammar schools. Our universities rely on a steady stream of bright and able undergraduates. If we are to keep our best here in Northern Ireland, schools should be encouraged to provide an inspired and comprehensive science education” he added.

Heads of Chemistry and Careers from over thirty schools were invited to visit Almac Group’s headquarters in Craigavon for a “science awareness day”. Teachers were briefed on each of the company’s five divisions and the job opportunities available at the company for science graduates. Representatives from Invest Northern Ireland were also in attendance, and informed teachers on their work with science based firms across Northern Ireland.
