Dr Allen McClay, CBE Receives Knighthood in New Year’s Honours List

ALMAC’S SHINING KNIGHT
Dr Allen McClay CBE, Chairman and founder of Almac Sciences, has been knighted in recognition of his services to both business and charity. Sir Allen’s knighthood was the only one for Northern Ireland conferred in the New Year’s Honours list.
Sir Allen was the founder of Galen Ltd, which became Galen Holdings Plc, initially a pharmaceutical and services based organisation, Galen Holdings subsequently emerged as a speciality pharmaceutical company concentrating almost exclusively on the US market.
Sir Allen retired from Galen Holdings in 2001 and personally invested approximately £240 million to buy the four service-based businesses from Galen (CSS, CTS, ICTI and PDMS) and incorporated Almac Diagnostic Services to establish Almac Sciences, an organisation specialising in R & D, diagnostics, API manufacture, formulation development, all phases of clinical trials and the manufacture of finished product.
The Almac Sciences group has grown rapidly. Following additional investment of a further £50 million, by Sir Allen, it now employs almost 1,700 highly trained and skilled staff throughout Europe and America.
Separately from his commercial investments, Sir Allen has personally donated almost £20 million through the McClay Trust for research at Queen’s University Belfast. To date, the Trust has funded the £3.5 million McClay Research Center alongside the School of Pharmacy. A further £6 million has been donated for research in both the School of Pharmacy and the School of Chemistry with the remainder being committed to the funding of a new library at Queen’s University.
