Dr Alexandra Carvalho, Technical Leader in Almac’s Biocatalysis Group, holds a PhD in Computational Chemistry from the University of Porto. Her work centers on enzyme catalysis and evolution using computational methods. She has held research positions at Girona and Upsala Universities, founded Coimbra’s Rational Protein Engineering Group, and published over 50 papers.
Since joining Almac, Alexandra has applied computational methods to the discovery and engineering of biocatalysts for pharmaceutical and industrial applications. Her work combines bioinformatics, molecular modeling and enzyme engineering to support the development of novel enzymes with improved activity, selectivity and stability. She has played a key role in the development of Almac’s INSIGHT technology platform and has contributed to the creation of enzyme engineering approaches that enhance biocatalyst stability under challenging process conditions, supporting the practical application of enzymes in industrial manufacturing.
