Twenty-million-euro investment by Almac Group trebles chemical company’s revenues and innovative services

Arran Chemical Company (Arran), a member of the Almac Group, is celebrating 40 years in operation.

Originally founded in 1984 by Dr Anthony Owens, Almac acquired the company in 2015 to combine its biocatalysis and flow chemistry expertise with Arran’s large scale manufacturing capacity to improve production processes while enhancing sustainability.

Arran has grown significantly under Almac’s ownership – having invested over €20 million to date, revenues have more than trebled and employee numbers have grown from 45 to 125 people. Further planned facility and capacity expansions will support growth and meet future client demands.

Arran is a named manufacturer of key building blocks that go into over 30 different commercial drugs ranging from products that are used to treat hypertension, cardiovascular issues, renal problems and epilepsy among others. As well as life-changing pharmaceutical products, Arran manufactures aroma chemicals for the fragrances industry used in high-end perfumes and personal performance applications.  Arran also manufactures a range of fine chemicals used by the contact lens sector.

Dr. Stephen Barr, President and Managing Director of Almac Sciences said: “We are delighted Arran has reached this operational milestone and are proud of our global reputation for excellence built over these 40 years.

“Our success and ability to provide first class service has only been made possible by the dedication of our exceptional employees, and we pay tribute to their work as we reflect on this milestone. As we look to an exciting future, we wish to thank everyone who has played their part in our story so far. So, to our employees, clients, suppliers and other key stakeholders, thank you.”

Professor Tom Moody, VP Technology Development and Commercialization for Arran added: “Arran has engaged and thrived in chemical manufacturing for 40 years and continues to innovate in this space through the development of new technologies and subsequent deployment at production scale.

“Almac’s continued investment has allowed us to future-proof the business and we are excited about the years to come. I also echo my thanks to our great team in Athlone, our clients and key stakeholders. We look forward to reaching new milestones and making further advancements across the business.”
