Almac Group Promotes High Flying STEM Careers at Airwaves Portrush

July 26, 2019

Craigavon, N.I., 26 July 2019 – From 31st August to 1st September, a team of STEM (science, technology, engineering & maths) Ambassadors from global pharmaceutical and development organisation, Almac Group, will encourage attendees of all ages to participate in a range of fun, interactive science experiments at this year’s Airwaves Portrush event.

Visitors to the Almac exhibition will have the opportunity to learn more about the wide and varied range of careers available across its global sites and speak to employees about their own career paths. The more adventurous amongst the attendees can get involved in hands-on experiments that have been specifically designed to demonstrate key scientific principles used daily by chemists and biologists in Almac’s laboratories– including creating elephant toothpaste and, everyone’s favourite, making slime!.

The exhibition will take place as part of the Airwaves event’s “STEM Village”, which was introduced as part of the event programming in 2016 to showcase a variety of employers and educators that promote STEM education to visiting crowds. This year, attendance is expected to exceed 150,000.

Frances Weldon, STEM Outreach Manager Almac, said, “It’s our priority to meet and expose as many young people as we can to exciting career pathways in STEM, and exhibiting at the STEM Village provides a great opportunity to engage with many who may be interested in pursuing a STEM career. Our hands-on experiments aim to demonstrate scientific principles used every day at Almac and to show students how fun and engaging STEM subjects are when observed as real world biology and chemistry applications. We look forward to meeting people of all ages at Airwaves Portrush’s STEM Village!”

Experiments planned for the exhibition include:
• Creating ‘elephant toothpaste’
• pH experiments using every day household products
• Separation of dye pigments using paper chromatography
• Making slime
• Strawberry DNA extraction
• Indigo carmine traffic light experiment
